In Beirut, a Friend at Chase Manhattan (Continued)
In 1967, 390 US corporation representatives were located in Beirut, and they later grew to over 500, Aramco World Magazine reported in 1970.
Hello there, Noam here.
I thought the magazine was all about the oil industry, but I was in for a pleasant surprise. And lo, there she was, Beirut before the senseless and bloody civil war (1975-1990) when it was the regional headquarters for most American companies in the region.
Today’s post carries more details on US commercial and industrial involvement in the Middle East, with a focus on Beirut ( last week’s post was only an introduction). All the information was gleaned from a short article published by Aramco World Magazine in 1970. I share parts of that piece at a time when Washington’s involvement in the region is mainly discussed nowadays in terms of military presence/operations. I’m interested in the act of remembering this period in history regardless of the various opinions out there. It existed, and finding it brought joy to my mind, and expanded my knowledge. So, I’m sharing it in my newsletter. As always, thank you for reading and supporting my work.
